The High Plains Blues Society is pleased to present BLUES In The SCHOOLS project throughout NoCo schools, as one of its community service programs.

HPBS is happy to provide assemblies, classroom experiences, workshops and presentations in cooperation with K-12 teachers and administrators.  HPBS has a number of presenters who are knowledgeable, experienced and interested in educating students about Blues Music and the lasting cultural influences of this musical genre and can provide a range of interesting foci through which to discuss and experience The Blues.

Curricula can focus on:
  • Music History, the musical aspects of rhythm, structure, lyrics, tonality, composition, performance, instrumentation
  • Geography, as relates to the migration of the Blues up the Mississippi Delta to the urban centers along the Mighty River, the different styles of Blues created in isolation by different performers, and the impact of the Plantation System as it affected the development of Blues Music
  • Black History. Focusing how the music originated in the Niger Delta of West Africa and came to America vis the institution of the slave trade. Slavery in the south and the  economics of exploitation, the diaspora of black people after emancipation, economic influences drawing black people to urban areas.
  • Famous Blues performers and historical figures , styles and changes through time and location, early influences that are still evident in the music of today
  • Other variations on these themes

The High Plains Blues Society Blues has our Blues In The Schools (BITS) up and running and we are ready to bring Blues in the School presentations to schools in NoCo. Our Blues In The Schools is focused on keeping the history and legacy of this great American art form alive.  We think  the single most important thing a blues society can do is to show our youth what this artform is all about. We feel that we have an obligation to pass on the story and history of this music to the generations coming up so that it never dies. If the Blues dies a part of the American soul dies with it. Our Blues in the School (BITS) is not a concert, it is a qualified blues historian teaching the kids about the music and its historian, even teaching older kids how to write a song or play a harmonica.

We are anxious to work with more teachers and school administrators to bring the Blues into local classrooms and show kids the importance of the Blues not just in music and American culture, but in American History, and even several other subjects you would be surprised to hear that the Blues could have an impact on.

These presentations are interactive classes between talented instructors and the kids as they learn the powerful impact Blues has had on American culture. If you have kids, or grandkids and would like to bring BITS to their school, let’s talk! We are on the lookout for teachers and schools, and just as important SPONSORS and DONORS to help with the costs involved. The more money we can raise in donations and grants the more presentations we can provide to our local schools, so if you have ideas - let’s talk!

If you’re interested shoot us an email ( highplainsbluessociety@gmail.com) and let’s get started bringing the power of the Blues to the schools in Northern Colorado. By all means also help spread the word about the Blues In the School presentations with friends and relatives, talk it up to the blues fans you meet at the shows and jams.
